We use makeup for a variety of reasons. Some use it to hide their imperfect sides, be it dark circles under the eyes or dark spots, others use makeup to make them look more vibrant and natural for the day, for example, when they have not had enough sleep that night. After a long day at school or at work, you just do not want to do anything other than crawl into bed and fall asleep. You do not even care if you still have make-up on your face after 8 hours of work or being at school.
But did you know how incredibly important it is to remove makeup before going to bed? In the article “Why Do We Have A Skin Care Routine?” we already mentioned that “skin cells are constantly renewed because you lose a lot of skin cells throughout the day.” This process of renewal takes place especially at night, and if you leave make-up on your face, you prevent your skin from breathing freely. In addition, your face tends to look more impure the next morning, because the makeup and buildup of dirt and oil that you got on your face during your day clogged your pores and this leads to a higher tendency that your face is more prone to pimples and blackheads.
Often foundations and concealers have ingredients that ensure that the make-up stays mat throughout the day. Meaning your face should stay “dry”; using powders (bronzer, highligher, blush, setting powder) increases the fact that your face remains mat and sleeping with your makeup on means that your skin becomes drier and ages faster.
For whatever reason you use makeup, be it to feel more confident or just for fun, it is extremely important to remove makeup before you go to sleep!
Potential skin damages if you don’t remove your makeup
regeneration process of your skin cells does not take place or only poorly
greater tendency to get breakouts
your skin looks drier and even older
sleeping with eye make-up can irritate eyes, and this can lead to infections
sleeping with mascara can lead that your eyelashes become very thin or even fall off
