What are toners?
A toner is a lotion or wash that is designed to cleanse your skin and shrink the appearance of pores. As well as this, a toner protects and refreshes the skin. Whilst researching toners, it became apparent to me that using toners as part of your daily skincare routine can make your skin glowing.
Our skin is always exposed to environmental pollutants, and impurities and residue caused by these will take a toll on your skin, unless you make sure you have a good cleansing skincare routine. Facial toners can even protect your skin from harmful impurities in the environment.
There are a few ways in which toner can be applied, and those include via a cotton ball or pad, spraying it onto your face or by putting on a gauze facial mask that has a toner built into the gauze.
Choosing the right toner
There are a range of different toners and it’s important to choose the right one for your skin type.
People with oily skin should choose an alcohol-free toner that exfoliates. This would help to rid the skin of dead surface cells. Those with dry skin should go for a toner that helps to hydrate and allows for morturiser absorption.
Combination or normal skin can use any type, but it’s important that you choose an alcohol-free toner. People with sensitive skin must go for toners that are gentle to skin and free of any botanicals. Any harsh chemical can be a problem for sensitive skin, and that even applies with harsh natural plant extracts or essential oils.
Different types of toners
Skin fresheners: these are the mildest type of toners and are the most gentle to the skin. These are most suitable for dry, dehydrated, sensitive and normal skins. However, they can give sensitive skin a burning sensation, so you have to be careful with which one you choose.
Skin toners: these are slightly stronger than skin fresheners and are suitable to be used on normal, combination or oily skin. These toners contain a small quantity of alcohol, so if your skin is sensitive to alcohol, then this type of toner isn’t for you.
Acid toners: again, these are slightly stronger. The acids in these toners are meant to chemically exfoliate your skin, and so are best for exfoliating your skin.
Toners are actually pretty simple. They clean your skin and give your skin a healthy, natural glow - and who doesn't want that! They could also become an invaluable part of your skincare routine; and if there’s one thing that our skin loves, it’s the rejuvenating feeling of being fresh and clean!
